File Submission

Disks
Many years in the design and printing field have taught us the best methods for submitting files for publication. We have gotten the best and most consistent results by using Illustrator to build logos/hard art, Photoshop to edit/size photos and placing them together with text in Quark Xpress or InDesign. While there are other methods and software packages, this process has proven to be not only best for us but the printing industry as a whole as we have observed.
Any job sent to us MUST INCLUDE all linked art and fonts.
MAGAZINE PUBLISHER RECOMMENDS:
Macintosh:
Quark Xpress
In-Design
Adobe Photoshop .eps or .tiff files
Illustrator .eps or .ai files (see Vector
Art Section below)
Freehand 7.0 (see Vector
Art Section below)
In all files colors need to be CMYK not RGB. Art needs to externally linked, do not include copies in the publication.
PC:
Quark Xpress 3.32 (NOT 4.X, save as 3.32) (run "Collect for Output" and gather fonts before sending)
In-Design
And yes, do use facing pages (reader's spreads) in your layout. This will allow you to have art run across the center gutters.

RASTER
(PHOTO) FILES:
Scans need to be sized to 100% in the
document and saved as CMYK EPS or CMYK Tiff. Double
check that files are CMYK and not RGB. FlightCheck is a wonderful software the will not only do this check but many other magazine-critical checks. Click here to visit
their website. Click here to download
our FlightCheck settings.
DO NOT SEND THESE FILE FORMATS:
PICT
WMF
JPEG
GIF TIF with LZW compression
TIF with layers (flatten the file)
.PSD with layers (flatten the file)
EPS with DCS options
EPS with included Transfer Functions
EPS with included Halftone screens
EPS with Encoding other than Binary (NO JPEG!)
EPS with previews other than 8 bit (NO JPEG!)
or any file with color profiles.
The EPS options screen should look like this:

or

The TIFF options screen should look like
this:

Note:
Photoshop 6.0 or later eps files will need
to flattened BEFORE saving. This helps avoid font problems in files.
VECTOR
FILES:
Double check that files are CMYK and not
RGB.
Convert fonts to paths in Illustrator and
Freehand and save as EPS. Not converting increases the
chances of forgetting to send the font.
Do not "nest" files (don't build your EPS
with imported graphics). Doing so often causes
imagesetters to crash and increases the chances of
losing files. Also, nesting makes it very difficult if
not impossible for us to correct any problems that
might happen within a file meaning we will have to
send it back to you. It is best to build the ad in
your layout software.
If possible, save your EPS files as level one
postscript not level 2 or 3.

1. If you are not sending pdfs you must include every
font used in your document including ones used in
your linked files. This is why we suggest that you
convert fonts to paths in Illustrator/Freehand. It is
easy to forget these fonts.
2. Do not use key functions to bold or italicize
your text. Instead use the bold or italic version
of the font. For instance, Helvetica Bold does not
fill the same amount of space on the page as Helvetica
bolded. Your text flow will change throughout the
document. Also, the font will often revert back to the
plain version.

3. Avoid Truetype Fonts. Many TrueType fonts, especially "homemade ones" or ones downloaded off the Internet will not print on imagesetters. If you have ANY trouble printing on your printer, your magazine will not print on our end. Play it safe and use Type 1.
4.
Never use the font
Impact. It will almost always have problems with
letter spacing when imaging! If Impact MUST be used
(in a masthead for example), please rebuild in
Illustrator, convert to paths and import it into your
document.
5. Do not use OSX Default (.dfont) Fonts. Right now they can be problematic when printing to our imagesetters. Please use Type 1 or True type versions of the font.

Magazine Publisher magazines go
directly to plate from disk; there is no film.
Therefore, stripping of film is not possible. In this
case, there will be a $120 charge for supplied film to
be copy-dot scanned. Be sure your client is aware of
the additional cost.
