Quark 5.x PDF Instructions

Before making pdfs be sure all your photo files are at the proper resolution and are CMYK. See link.

To create PDF files for magazine printing there are three steps required: document building, creating a settings file, and distilling the individual pages.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:

You will need: Quark Xpress 5
Adobe Distiller

PPD:

Download this file and place it into your Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions folder of your System folder

PDF SETTINGS

1. Start Distiller

2. Select "High Quality", "Press Settings" or upper end setting.

3. Go to the Settings Menu and select "Edit Adobe Acrobat Settings" or "Job Options depending on the version of Acrobat you are using.

General Tab:
Acrobat 4
Resolution: 2400
Binding: Left

Compression Tab:
Color and Grayscale Images: Bicubic downsampling at 300dpi with NO COMPRESSION.
Monochrome Bitmaps:
Bicubic downsampling at 1200dpi with NO COMPRESSION.

Fonts Tab:
Check: Embed All Fonts
and
Subset All Embedded Fonts Below 100%

Color Tab:
Check Leave Color Unchanges and leave all others unchecked.
Options: uncheck all except "Preserve Under color Removal..."

Advanced Tab:
Check all the boxed shown in this link...

Hit "Save As" and name your settings file "Magazine Settings" into your Distiller settings folder.

Leave Distiller Running.

MAKING A PDF FILE

Go to the File Menu, go to the Export option and select the "Layout as PDF" option.

Click on the "Options" button.

Click on Hyperlinks Tab:
Unselect (turn off) the "Include Hyperlinks" box.

Job Options Tab:
Unselect (turn off) the "Override Distiller's Font Options"
and
Unselect (turn off) the "Override Distiller's Compression Options"

Output Tab:
Check the boxes shown in this link.

Select the "PrintPilot _PPD" Printer Description

Color Output: Composite
Print Colors: CMYK
Uncheck (turn off) "Use OPI"

Registration: Centered with an Offset of 12pts.

Bleed: Page Items

Hit OK

Name your page:

VERY IMPORTANT: Name your file using the following convention:

1. page number proceeded by 3 zeros for numbers less than 10 and 2 zeros 10 and above.
2. magazine name's two letter abbreviation
3. month and year
4. and.ps at the end

examples using Your Magazine as the title:
page one (cover): 0001_YMOct04.pdf
page nine: 0009_YMOct04.pdf
page fifteen: 0015_YMOct04.pdf
page thirty eight: 0038_YMOct04.pdf

You will be saving each page NOT the entire document as one pdf. If your magazine has 32 pages, there will be 32 pdfs

Hit save. The pdf file will be written to your hard drive. Repeat until every page is written.
