Quark 6.X PDF Instructions
The option to PDF directly out of Quark with versions 5 and 6 has greatly simplified the options of creating pdfs.
Before making pdfs be sure all your photo files are at the proper resolution and are CMYK. See link.
SOFTWARE
REQUIREMENTS:
You will need Quark Xpress 6.
PDF SETTINGS:
1. Go to the QuarkXpress Menu and select Preferences.
2. Select PDF.
Workflow: select the "Direct to PDF" button.
Virtual Memory: 1000 MB
Default name: "Layout pdf"
3. Click the Default Options button.
Hyperlinks Tab:
Unselect (turn off) the "Include Hyperlinks" box.
Job Options Tab:
Check the "Embed all fonts" and " Subset fonts below" boxes. Type in 100% as the option.
Compression Options: On all select Compression as "None" and Resolution as "keep Resolution".
Check the "Compress Text and Line Art" box.
Output Tab:
Color Output: "Composite" and Colors: "CMYK". Unselect (turn off) the "Use OPI" box.
Registration needs to be "Centered" with an Offset of 12pt.
Bleeds to "Page Items Only"
Hit OK and OK.
4. Go to the Utilities Menu and select XTentions Manager.
Uncheck: Custom Bleeds, OPI, Quark CMS, and WordPerfect Filter.
5. Go back to #1 of this list and double check the settings.
MAKING A PDF FILE:
1. Go to the File Menu, go to the Export option and select the "Layout as PDF" option.
You will be saving each page NOT the entire document as one pdf. If your magazine has 32 pages, there will be 32 pdfs.
VERY IMPORTANT: Name your
file using the following convention:
1. page number proceeded by 3
zeros for numbers less than 10 and 2 zeros 10
and above.
2. magazine name's two letter abbreviation
3. month and year
4. and.ps at the end
examples using Your Magazine as the
title:
page one (cover): 0001_YMOct04.pdf
page nine: 0009_YMOct04.pdf
page fifteen: 0015_YMOct04.pdf
page thirty eight: 0038_YMOct04.pdf
3. then hit save. The pdf file will be written to your hard drive. Repeat until every page is written.
Do not forget to include printouts of all your
pages when sending your disk.
